They say that art imitates life, but the reverse is also true.
On September 11th, 2001 I was in Seattle. The south tower had just collapsed when I turned on the TV in the hotel room. As I watched the video of the planes crashing into the towers, I immediately thought, “they actually did it.”
Not too long before that day, I had read Tom Clancy’s “Debt of Honor”. The story describes how a terrorist takes his fully-fueled airplane and crashes it into the capital building. Prior to reading Clancy’s book, I couldn’t even imagine anyone doing so. We may never know where the real terrorists got their inspiration, but it’s not a stretch to imagine it came from that book.
Last night, I was watching an episode of the original Law & Order (Season 1, Episode 11). In the show, a teenage black girl claimed to have been raped by two white cops. A city councilman quickly used it as an opportunity to further his cause against racial injustice. His speeches inflamed the public who demanded justice. He kept the girl and his family away from the police so that they couldn’t properly investigate the crime. But, things weren’t as they seemed. The girl was lying.
The councilman knew there was no truth to her claim but decided to hide the truth so he could use the “crime” to help further his cause. Even though he was warned that doing so would set race relations back thirty years and cause protesters to burn the city. He cared more about his agenda than he did about the people of his city.
As I watched the show, I thought to myself, “they actually did it.”
Black Lives Matter, and the Democrats used George Floyd’s death to further their cause against racial injustice. They claimed the police purposely killed an unarmed and compliant man. They claim that the police are hunting black men to exterminate them. They claim that there is systemic racism in the U.S. But none of it is true.
As in the TV show, evidence was suppressed and ignored because it didn’t support their narrative. The bodycam footage that was eventually leaked clearly shows that Mr. Floyd wasn’t complying with the officers’ orders. The data and facts don’t support their assertion that the police are hunting black men. As the TV show predicted, cities are burning. All because of a lie. But BLM, and the Democrats don’t care. Well the Democrats actually do care. They care more about their political agenda than they do the people they were elected to serve.
The TV show also predicted that race relations would be set back thirty years. But remember that the first season of Law & Order aired twenty-five years ago. So, instead of setting back race relations by thirty years, BLM and the Democrats are trying to set race relations back fifty-five years.
I’m certainly not the only one watching Law & Order reruns. So, it’s not hard to imagine that this show might have been used as a blueprint of how to make bad situation worse and advance a political agenda.
In the show, District Attorneys Stone and Robinette were able to negotiate a truce with the councilman to avert disaster. In real life, the Left isn’t interested in deescalating the situation. They are content to let looters and rioters terrorize their citizens, all because they want to further their agenda. An agenda based on untruths.
What we’re seeing today is eerily similar to the storyline of a TV show from twenty-five years ago. So, while it’s true that art imitates life, sometimes it’s also true that life imitates art.
