Segregation 2020

Segregation is alive and well in the year 2020.  But this time it’s not race that’s separating us, it’s ideas. And this time we’re doing it voluntarily.

I’ve tried to have conversations with Liberals.  It’s not fun.  In fact, it’s quite painful.  I like a good argument as much as the next guy but Liberals, in general, don’t want to exchange ideas.  Instead, they go from zero to nasty in less time than it will take you to read this sentence.

Back when I was in the video game industry, we used this metric called “time to Hitler”.  It measured the number of exchanges before a discussion devolved into one side of the conversation making a comparison between the other side and Hitler.  It happened a lot.  The less posts it took for the conversation to go from nice to nasty, the less healthy the online community was.

Today, we need to rework the “time to Hitler” metric and call it instead “time to racist”.  In other words, how many exchanges does it take a discussion between a Conservative and a Liberal to devolve to the point where the Liberal calls the Conservative a racist.  The less time it takes for someone to call the other person a racist the less healthy our community is.   Sadly, we’re already at 1.  All a Conservative has to do to be branded a racist is say one of hundreds of different things.

If you merely disagree with a Liberal, for any reason, the Liberal will call you a racist.  There’s no discussion, banter, or free exchange of ideas.  In the eyes of Liberals, disagreement equals racism.

Let me give you an example:
Conservative: “I support President Trump.”
Liberal: “You’re a racist!”

Here’s another one:
Conservative: “I don’t believe we should defund the police.”
Liberal: “You’re a racist!”

I’m going to pause for a bit and say that it may seem like I’m picking on Liberals here. But I’m not.  It may look that way but I’m simply going with the facts.  You will rarely, if ever, hear a Conservative call a Liberal a racist.  It just doesn’t happen.

Now, where we?  Oh yeah.  Everyone has their limits.  Whether it’s the mainstream media lying to us, having to follow silly virus-prevention rules or people acting nasty towards us, eventually, we’re going to think “enough is enough”.  And, when we’ve had enough, we do something about it.

Those of us with Conservative views have gotten tired of being treated like crap by Liberals.  The very same Liberals who have recently started saying they want “unity”. This general nastiness has been going on for about 20 years, but it started getting really bad in 2016.  And, we’re sick of it.

Rather than keep getting whacked with the racist stick for…well…breathing, Conservatives have started moving to safer places for themselves to gather online.  This includes things like making private groups on social media to moving away from Facebook and Twitter and migrating to other platforms such as MeWe and Parler.  There are other solutions available as well, but the result is the same.  We’re segregating ourselves.

We should be using our 1st Amendment right to participate in a free exchange of ideas.  It’s the only way we’re going to find common ground.  Instead, Liberals have been using that right to insult, threaten, and cancel anyone who disagrees with them.

So, instead of Conservatives and Liberals debating and influencing each other, Conservatives been forced to move into the cyber-equivalent of a speakeasy.  They’re not selling bootleg liquor, they’re simply guilty of exchanging radical ideas like supporting the police, not supporting looters and wanting to ensure that presidents are elected fairly.

I’d like to be able to say that I have a solution, but I’ve come up dry.  I’m going to lay this problem right at the feet of the Liberals who claim to want unity.  Conservatives would absolutely love it if we could talk out our problems and figure out a way to come together.  But, that’s not likely to happen as long as we’re insulted, threatened and cancelled the instant we say something.

So, Liberals, if you want unity, you need to figure out a way to stop being offended about everything and somehow increase the “time to racist” to a point where we can actually have a conversation.
