I agree with Lester Holt. No, not about his “fairness is overrated” comment. His attempt to use logic that uses a “the sun sets in the west” analogy to justify that two sides of an argument shouldn’t be given equal merit is ridiculous. I’m referring to something else he said.
It’s true, the sun sets in the west. That is indisputable. Letting someone claim otherwise isn’t going to help anyone. But, not giving airtime to someone who claims the sun rises in the west is not the same as …say…ignoring the fact that Joe Biden has lost his mind.
So, when I say I agree with Lester, I’m not referring to that. I’m referring to what he said later.
“Our duty is to be fair to the truth. Holding those in power accountable is at the core of our function and responsibility,” he said. “We need to hear our leader’s views, their policies and reasoning. It’s really important, but we have to stand ready to push back and call-out falsehoods.”
That’s a great idea Lester. You should try it sometime.
I would love for someone to question Biden on his views, his policies and the reasoning behind them. Hell, I’d love to hear Joe Biden string together two coherent sentences. That would be awesome.
What would be even more awesome is if Lester and his so-called “news organization” would start taking a serious look at Joe’s mental health, or lack thereof. If calling out falsehoods is so important to them, why isn’t someone calling out the fact that Joe is nothing more than a prop?
I’d love to see someone ask Joe to explain why troops have been sent into Syria, why our borders are no longer secure, and why “stimulus” payments to illegal aliens and eliminating our energy independence are good ideas. I’d also love to see someone push back on hundreds of other boneheaded things Joe Biden has done since taking office.
Why doesn’t someone ask Joe to explain how his child-molesting, bribe-taking, hooker-impregnating, sister-in-law-screwing, drug-addled, Chinese-partnering son isn’t considered a threat to national security? That seems to me to be more newsworthy than Jill Biden pretending to be a flight attendant.
But, Joe isn’t the only leader that needs to be held accountable. How about asking Nancy Pelosi to explain how her home city of San Francisco has turned into an actual shit hole? Why isn’t someone pushing back and pointing out that the policies she wants to inflict upon the entire nation have miserably failed back home.
And, as long as they’re on an unending quest for the truth, I would like someone at the Nightly News to explain to everyone why a white guy killing ten people in Colorado is big news, but a Muslim killing those exact same ten people in Colorado is not.
Lester Holt warns the media not to provide a platform for misinformation. But what can be more misleading than ignoring anything that doesn’t advance a particular agenda. It’s ironic that Lester is warning others not to become what the Nightly News already is.
The fact is, Lester Holt is an actor. His job is to read other people’s words. The only requirements for his position are that he, or she, have an accent-free voice and look good on camera. That’s it. A news anchor doesn’t need to be particularly bright. Anyone can read a teleprompter. Hell, even Joe Biden can almost do it. People don’t watch Lester because he’s insightful, they watch him because he’s good at acting like someone who is.
I agree with Lester Holt. More accurately, I agree with whoever wrote the words that Lester read. Holding those in power accountable is supposed to be the core function of the press. That’s what the First Amendment is all about. It’s not about being fair, it’s about finding the truth and exposing it, whatever it may be.
